Survey of Pending Federal Data Breach Legislation: Is Massachusetts (and its WISP) About to be Preempted by Federal Law?

Thursday, November 3, 2011 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM
Boston Bar Association - 16 Beacon Street, Boston, MA

Description:

Attorney John H. Lacey of The McCormack Firm will discuss the shifting landscape of pending federal data breach notification legislation. In April, Sony announced that a massive data breach had compromised approximately 100 million customers’ personal information. Notification of these losses to those individuals, and overall response to the data breach, involved a patchwork of at least 46 different state privacy and data breach laws. Congress seems intent on standardizing the notification process across the nation. What are the differences among the pending bills? What impact will Congress’ action have on the Massachusetts Data Breach Notification law and the associated regulations at 201 CMR 17? Is the WISP about to become history? What effect will a new federal law have on your clients?  Join us to discuss the answers to these questions.
