Representing Military Personnel, Veterans, and their Families in Family Court

The Massachusetts National Guard and Reserve components currently have approximately 3500 soldiers deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. Many of these servicemembers and their families will suffer a tremendous strain due to either frequent or extended deployments. Family law attorneys are likely to encounter servicemembers, veterans, or their family members during the course of their practice. Speakers Lisa LaFera, Attorney at Law, Anna Schleelein, Shelter Legal Services, Major. Shannon McLaughlin, and a Military Pay Representative from the Massachusetts Army National Guard will cover family law issues specific to the military such as: the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act; Jurisdictional issues in divorce and child support matters; Division of Military Retirement Pay; Understanding military pay and allowances (how to read a Leave and Earnings Statement “LES”); Understanding the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (“DFAS”), the agency charged with implementing garnishments and collecting child support; Guardianships; and Abuse Prevention orders.
